Assessment Comments

Assessment based on results of 1991 and 1992 IDNR stream use assessments conducted in Pottawattamie county.

Basis for Assessment

NOTE:  Keg Creek was divided into two subsegments for the 1998 Section 305(b) report.   The previous segment was excessively long (44 miles) for a Class B(LR) stream, and physical differences exist (extensively channelized vs.  moderately channelized to meandering) between the downstream and upstream subsegments.   The subsegment boundary (confluence with Little Keg Creek 3 miles NW of Treynor, Pottawattamie Co.) was chosen due to these differences.  (JRO, Sept.  1998)]
Used results of the DNR stream use assessments E of McClelland in October 1991 and SE of Neola in August 1992 to assess support of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses as FST.   Field sheets from these assessments suggest that this reach of Keg Creek has occasional naturally meandering reaches with other areas channelized with freqent to extensive streambank erosion.   Both assessments note the deep silts in the stream channel.   The fish community at the McClelland site (7 spp; 3 fams) contains nearly all the expected species/genera of Class B(LR) streams in the Loess Hills/Rolling Prairie region.   Thus, despite the physical alterations to the stream corridor and to the aquatic habitats, and despite excessive amounts of sediment in the stream channel, the composition of the fish community suggests that the Class B(LR) uses are fully supported.   Additional monitoring is needed to determine the status of the aquatic communities and habitats.
