Assessment Comments

Assessment based on the results of IDNR stream use assessments in Monona and Ida counties.

Basis for Assessment

Used a review of the field sheets for the July and August 1992 DNR stream use assessments to upgrade the assessment of support of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses from PS to FST due to the presence of a majority of the expected fish taxa (4 of 7) at both sites sampled; if both collections are combined, 5 of the 7 expected taxa were present.   The Soldier River is typical of the extensively channelized and chronically turbid rivers and streams of the Loess Hills and Rolling Prairies (47e) subecoregion.   Comparison to fish surveys conducted in the late 1800s by Meek and in the 1970s by DNR Fisheries Biologist Don Kline suggest very little historical change in the fish fauna of this river during the last 100 years.
