Assessment Comments

Assessment based on results of July 1992 IDNR stream use assessments conducted in Ida county.

Basis for Assessment

Used results of the two July 1992 DNR stream use assessments in Ida County to upgrade the assessment of support of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses to FST due to (1) presence of a moderately diverse fish community for the NW Iowa Loess Prairies subecoregion (10 species from 2 families) and (2) presence of a majority (6 of 9) of the expected fish taxa for streams in this region.   Pasture use, channelization, and streambank erosion remain threats to full support of the Class B(LR) uses.   Some of these threats may be addressed through 5-year Battle Creek Watershed/Groundwater Protection Project.   As part of this cooperative project, cost share arrangements are available for streambank stabilization and for riparian zone filter strip plantings.   In addition, this project involves efforts to improve management of animal waste, nutrients, and pesticides.   For more information on this project, call the Ida County Soil & Water Conservation District at 712/364-2124.
