Basis for Assessment

Assess support of Class A primary contact recreation uses as NS due to ban on swimming imposed for lake.   According to Union County Sanitarian John Franklin, a ban on swimming was imposed by the city several years ago (before he agreed to take on the job of county sanitarian) due to high levels of bacteria in the lake.   Primary source of bacteria identified as overloaded and improperly designed residential sceptic systems.   No monitoring is currently conducted at the lake.   County is working to correct septic field problems in watershed of lake.   Franklin feels that the problems will soon (1 or 2 years) be corrected.  Corrective actions include forcing residents to hook up to nearby sanitary sewer lines and forcing residents that depend on septic tanks to upgrade systems.
