WINOFI

The amount of data available for this assessment (five samples) did not meet DNR IR Methodology that requires at least 10 samples be collected per segment over a three-year period. Assessments that do not meet DNR assessment/listing guidelines are considered “evaluated” (i.e., of lower confidence); these assessments are not appropriate for adding waters to Iowa’s Section 303(d) list of impaired waters. Such assessments are appropriate for addition of waters to IR subcategory 3b and to Iowa’s list of waters in need of further investigation (WINOFI).

Class BWW1 - Fish kill Assessment:

The Class BWW1 aquatic life use assessment based on the 2013 and 2015 fish kills placed this segment in Category 5b. The fish kills were caused by a “pollutant” or was suspected to be caused by a “pollutant”; therefore, the Class BWW1 use was considered impaired. Because the source of the pollutant was not identified and/or the enforcement actions taken against the responsible party have not been resolved, the Class BWW1 use was placed in Category 5b. Due to uncertainty regarding the recovery of the aquatic life following the fish kills, any existing fish kill 5b impairment will remain in Category 5b until more recent sampling has shown recovery of the aquatic community or the responsible party has paid restitution.
