Assessment based on results of an IDNR investigation of a fish kill in June 1999.

Basis for Assessment

SUMMARY:  The general aquatic life are "not assessed.”  Impacts from the most recent (1999) fish kill are believed to have dissipated, and not additional water quality information exists upon which to base an assessment.

EXPLANATION:  The previous (2002) assessment of the aquatic life uses ("partially supported") was based on the occurrence of a fish kill in 1999 (see assessment developed for the 2000 report for more information).   A fish kill occurred in this unnamed tributary of Long Branch and the South Raccoon River on June 19, 1999.   The site of the kill is approximately 3 miles northeast of Stuart in Guthrie County.   The kill was caused by leakage or overflow of manure from a waste retention structure that flowed through drainage tiles to this stream.   Investigation by DNR/EPD field office suggested (1) that this kill did not affect the South Raccoon River and (1) that previous discharges of manure throught the tile system had occurred.   The party responsible for this kill was identified, and restituion was sought.   According to IDNR's assessment methodology, the absence of a fish kill in the three-year period following a fish kill suggest that impacts from the kill have dissipated.   Thus, due to the lack of a subsequent kill in this stream reach, and due to the lack of other water quality information upon which to base an assessment of support of the aquatic life uses, the previous assessment of the aquatic life uses was changed to "not assessed."
