Assessment Summary

The Class A1 use was assessed (monitored) as "not supported" due to the presence of aesthetically objectionable conditions caused by algae blooms that created low water clarity and violations of the state’s criterion for pH. The Class BLW use was assessed (monitored) as “not supported” due to violations of the state’s criterion for pH and "WINOFI" based on information from the DNR Fisheries Bureau. The Class HH (fish consumption) use was assessed as “fully supported” based on fish tissue sampling data. Note: A TMDL for algae and pH in this lake was prepared and approved by EPA in October 2014. Because the primary Section 303(d) impairment identified for the current assessment/listing cycle (algae) is addressed by the TMDL, this waterbody is placed in IR Category 4a (impaired; TMDL approved).

The level of inorganic suspended solids was low at Beaver Lake and did not suggest that non-algal turbidity contributed to the impairment at this lake.

Although the index value for Chlorophyll a is below the impairment trigger of 65 for this assessment cycle, the Class A1 use of Beaver Lake remains "not supported" due to aesthetically objectionable conditions. Based on DNR's methodology, the median TSI value for Chlorophyll a must be 63 or less for two consecutive assessment/listing cycles before a lake can be removed from the state's Section 303(d) list (IR Category 5). Therefore, Beaver Lake will remain listed as "not supported" for the 2022 assessment/listing cycle.

Class BLW - Fisheries Information:

The Class BLW (aquatic life) use was assessed (evaluated) as “WINOFI” based on information from the DNR Fisheries Bureau and results of the ISU lake surveys. Information from the DNR Fisheries Bureau suggests that Beaver Lake has no vegetation due to a large grass carp population and excessive algae and nutrients.
