Assessment is based on information from Marion County SWCD.

Basis for Assessment

Used information in Marion County Soil & Water Conservation District application to assess support of the Class B(LW) uses as PS due to (1) statements regarding the lake being "significantly impacted by sediment that is caused by soil erosion in the predominantly agricultural 7,691-acre watershed." Application also notes existence of two abandoned [coal?] strip mines within 1/2 mile of the lake with low pH mine spoil on steep slopes that have an impact on lake water quality.   A summary of recreational useage (no dates given) shows high levels of use for camping, fishing, and swimming, thus suggesting that the Class A (primary contact) uses are FST.   Application notes that 30 acres of lake surface area have been lost to sedimentation within the last 10 to 14 years.   Lesser impacts to water quality are suspected from high levels on NPS-related nutrients and pesticides.   Although progress in controlling soil erosion in the watershed has been made, addition NPS control are suggested in the application:  terraces, grassed waterways, grade stabilization structures/sediment control structures in gullies, and wetland development.   Project is designed as a three-year effort beginning in January 1997.
