Ottumwa Park Ponds IA 04-LDM-1015
Wapello Co. S25 T72N R14W at Ottumwa (total of five ponds)
Assessment Comments
Assessment is based on results of U.S. EPA / IDNR fish tissue (RAFT) monitoring in 2001.
Basis for Assessment
Notes: (1) The Ottumwa Park Ponds (excluding the Ottumwa Lagoon) have not been assessed for previous Section 305(b) reports; (2) use designations for the "Greater Ottumwa Central Park Ponds," as described in the Iowa Water Quality Standards, are applied to the "Ottumwa Park Ponds" (IA 04-LDM-0020-L) as well as to the "Ottumwa Lagoon" (IA 04-LDM-00215-L). Six ponds are included with the following acreages: 3.0, 9.64, 6.0, 10.4, 5.82 and 1.75 for an approximate total of 37 acres. The ponds of 10.4, 3, and 5.8 acres are managed by the IDNR Fisheries Bureau for channel catfish production.
SUMMARY: The Class A (primary contact recreation) uses and the Class B(LW) aquatic life uses of these ponds were not assessed. The fish consumption uses are assessed as "fully supported." The source of data for this assessment is the results of U.S. EPA/IDNR fish tissue (RAFT) monitoring in 2001. EXPLANATION: The Class A and Class B(LW) uses were not assessed due to the lack of monitoring data or other water quality information for these waterbodies. These lakes have not been sampled as part of previous water quality monitoring activities in Iowa. Fish consumption uses were assessed as "fully supported" based on results of U.S. EPA / IDNR fish tissue (RAFT) monitoring in 2001. Levels of all contaminants (including technical chlordane) in the composite samples of fillets from channel catfish and largemouth bass were well below one-half of the respective FDA action levels and IDNR levels of concern. The levels of technical chlordane in the sample of channel catfish fillets was 0.03 ppm; this contaminant was not detected in the sample of fillets from largemouth bass. The very low levels of contaminants in fish from the Ottumwa Park Ponds is in contrast to the relatively high levels of technical chlordane in channel catfish from the adjacent Ottumwa Lagoon (waterbody IA 04-LDM-00215-L).
